MINI COATS were the social scene of the swinging 60s.
Hemlines continued to rise, encouraged by the designs of Mary Quant and John Bates, reaching the high of the mega- micro.
Coats were thigh-skimming, challenging the established notion that women should cover up their bodies. For fashionistas, the leggy look was an expression of new freedom.
The fall season is all about the temperature swiftly changing from hot to cool, so we’re always in two minds whether to wear something completely covered to avoid the cold or to expose the skin a little to avoid the heat.
Wearing combinations such as a mid-length dress with an overcoat paired with shoes solves the problem completely. You’re playing safe both ways that way. If that doesn’t work for you, then pairing up an overcoat or jacket with a maxi dress and sandals, can do wonders too.

When it comes to pairing your jacket or coat with your outfit, that particular piece of clothing becomes an accessory to the complete outfit so it all depends on how you play with the accessory. As shown in the images of the red overcoat with the black dress, you can style the coat in various ways such as:
- You can just let the coat fall from one shoulder for a more party wear look.
- Or the easiest way is to just wear the coat completely and this works best for a formal look.
- And lastly, you don’t need to wear the coat but simply place it on your shoulder. This would be great for a semi-formal look.
- Sometimes, when you want to accessorize your outfit, even more, all you need to do is wear the overcoat and add a regular thin black belt around your waist. This can work amazingly well for a formal as well as a casual look.
As far as getting the colour combinations right during the fall season is concerned, there are plenty of colours that you all can wear. Colours like –
- Bright red- adds drama and excitement as it stimulates the senses.
- Burgundy- strong and powerful
- Light peach- speaks of softness and ease
- Coral- imparts a healthy glow
- Syrup brown- an earthy and grounded solid brown
- Dark rose-pink- creates a presence that can’t be ignored
- Sugar almond- an appetizing mid-tone that is a sweetened shade of brown
- Dark cheddar- a sharp blend of yellow and orange
- Black- relates to strength, power, elegance and seriousness
- Galaxy blue- a thoughtful blue hue
- Airy blue- the colour of quiet resolve
- Orange- imparts a fearless energy
- Forest green- plays on the tradition
- Evening blue- the symbol of the evening sky
- Aurora red- a display of a natural coloured red light in the sky that occurs in the ‘auroral zone’
- Bodacious (purple)- a colour of royalty, dignity and peace
- Grey- all about being neutral and balanced
- Blue-grey- a dull leaden-blue colour
- Beige- a colour that expresses calmness and relaxation
These colours are the ones that are most preferably worn during the fall season. They are shades that highlight your outfit and presence even more during this period. Also, they look good on any skin tone/complexion. You don’t need to worry if you’re too fair, too dark or dusky. Colours can be played with anyhow. For instance, a shade of blue would look good with a shade of yellow, a pink with a green, a black with a shade of red or simply just one colour. Wearing them individually or a combination of colours depends on the individual.
